Which Gelco Models This Applies To

Gelco caps fall into two main lines we see in Thousand Oaks homes: the Series-A (single-flue, bolt-on mount) and the Series-L (multi-flue, outside-mount with 24-gauge lid). The Series-A uses a 5/16-inch bolt pattern that only fits flue tiles measuring 8×8, 8×12, or 13×13 inches on the outside dimension. The Series-L spans the full chimney crown and requires a minimum 2-inch overhang on all sides, which means it won’t work on chimneys with crown edges already spalled back past the flue line.

To identify your model, check the underside of the lid for a stamped Gelco part number (format: GCA-### for Series-A, GCL-### for Series-L). If the stamp’s rusted over, measure the flue tile outside width and the crown width at its narrowest point. We carry both OEM Gelco and Haven-spec aftermarket equivalents sourced through our buying network. The aftermarket units match Gelco’s 304 stainless spec and carry the same 10-year warranty, but cost 15-20% less. The catch: some Series-L aftermarket lids run 1/8 inch thinner on the mesh skirt, which matters if your crown has a pronounced slope. Signs Your Gelco Chimney Cap Installation Is Failing

• Rust streaks down the chimney face. Gelco caps use 304 stainless, but the spot-welded corners on pre-2015 units trap moisture from Thousand Oaks morning marine layer fog. Once the weld cracks, water wicks behind the cap and runs down the flue tile, staining the brick below.
• Mesh screen pulling away from the lid. The screen is secured with a rolled edge that fatigues after 8-12 years of thermal cycling. In Conejo Valley, where fireplaces see heavy weekend use October through March, that cycling accelerates. A separated screen lets embers exit and squirrels enter.
• Cap tilted or missing after wind. Gelco Series-A uses two 5/16-inch bolts into the flue tile. If the flue tile crown is cracked (common in 1970s-1980s Thousand Oaks tract homes), the bolt anchors fail and the cap lifts in Santa Ana conditions over 45 mph.
• Water in the firebox after rain. This means the cap lid is no longer shedding water past the flue opening, or the drip edge has corroded through. The water path is direct: lid, flue, smoke chamber, firebox. Left unaddressed, it degrades the damper and rusts the fire grate.
• Visible daylight around the flue from below. Shine a flashlight up the flue. If you see sky instead of mesh, the cap is gone, the mesh has rotted out, or it was never installed with a proper storm collar. Any gap larger than 3/8 inch is an ember hazard during burning season.

DIY or Call Us?

There’s one thing a homeowner can safely check: whether the cap is actually missing or visibly detached from ground level. Use binoculars. Don’t climb the roof.

Everything else goes wrong on a pitched roof 15-25 feet up with a 30-pound metal cap and power tools. The bolt torque spec on Gelco Series-A is 15 ft-lbs, enough to crack an already compromised flue tile if you don’t know what you’re listening for. Series-L caps require drilling new pilot holes into the crown, and the silicone sealant bead has to be tooled within five minutes of application or it skins over and leaks. We’ve also found dead bees, wasp nests, and deteriorated chimney crowns that won’t support a new mount until they’re rebuilt.
